ASEZ WAO Mifflin Square Park Cleanup in Philadelphia

On June 15, 2025, volunteers from ASEZ WAO gathered at Mifflin Square Park and the surrounding neighborhood in Philadelphia to support the Green Earth and 2040 Global Plastic-Free campaigns. This popular park, used daily by joggers, dog walkers, and children, had collected a surprising amount of litter. Residents in this close-knit community saw the trash as an eyesore and a growing concern. For this reason, ASEZ WAO came together to help their neighbors and clean their community space.

Bringing New Life to Mifflin Square Park

The day began at 10 a.m. as volunteers set up educational panels about global warming, recycling, litter, and the harmful effects of plastics. Their mission was to help residents understand how everyday plastic use harms the environment and how they could reduce their impact. Many locals stopped by, asked questions, and thanked volunteers for creating a safer, cleaner space for families and children. One resident even asked for help clearing trash and debris from his backyard.

Councilman Mark Squilla was among those who joined the event. He praised the volunteers, saying, “What you have provided today was hope and possibilities for our community, for individuals in the neighborhood, and really for the city of Philadelphia.” He was also impressed by the turnout, exclaiming, “Wow! Where did you find this army? This is a great service for the community and the residents.”

Cleaning with Purpose and Unity

Volunteers focused special attention on the children’s playground, removing litter and broken items near the swings, slides, and basketball court. For two hours, the 87 volunteers worked with bright, joyful smiles, collecting 1,500 pounds of trash and debris. Their hard work transformed the park and surrounding neighborhood into a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming space.

Travis, one of the volunteers, shared, “It was really awesome to see so many young people come together for a positive cause.” Joshua added, “What we are doing today is more than just cleaning plastic, we are making a statement that if we come together we can tackle this problem.”

Councilman Squilla also expressed his appreciation for ASEZ WAO’s partnership with the city. “To be able to reach out to ASEZWAO, to be able to have them partner with the city, to be able to provide a service is priceless,” he said. “I am so appreciative to be able to call ASEZWAO a partner with us, and with me and with the city of Philadelphia.”

The volunteers sent a clear message that caring for the environment is essential to sustaining life and fighting global warming. Their work proves how small actions can make a big difference for the community.
