About the Soul

The Origin of Our Soul

Through the truth about the angelic world where we were before coming into this world, we can know what happens to the soul when the body dies.

“And the dust returns to the ground it came from and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

Ecclesiastes 12:7

Death is a separation of the body and the spirit, and this verse explains a clear difference in destination for both parts. The body is described as mere dust, which upon death is no more than a handful of ashes. However, the soul continues to exist and returns to its Maker.

“‘Father into your hands I commit my spirit.’”

The Apostles described the body as a tent where the soul exists and will eventually depart.

“Our bodies are like tents that we live in here on earth.”

“… I live in the tent of this body … I know that I will soon put it aside. ... after my departure…”

The soul puts on the tent of the body and puts it aside at death. This is like putting on clothes during the day and taking them off in the evening. The body is temporary and will perish at the end of this life. It’s only the spirit that maintains its identity at the resurrection. For this reason, while living in the body, those who live for spiritual things will receive blessings according to their actions.

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.”
