Sabbath Day

Sabbath Day, the Day of the Creator

God made a promise to set apart and bless His people on the Sabbath, a day established since the beginning of the world (Ge 2:1–3). It is a chance to remember the Creator’s authority and gain a proper understanding of God.

“Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.”

Ezekiel 20:20

We can grasp this concept by comparing it to college students enrolling in classes to learn about a particular subject. If they don’t attend classes or study the material, they won’t gain any knowledge or become established in their fields. Similarly, God has instituted the Sabbath as a reminder of the Creator God who blesses and sanctifies us. When we honor the Sabbath and set it apart as holy, we can truly experience God’s presence and cultivate a meaningful relationship with Him.

Some believe this law only pertains to God’s people in the Old Testament. However, those seeking to understand God in the New Testament should also observe it. That’s why Jesus Christ frequently emphasized the significance of the Sabbath.

“Then he said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’”

Jesus who is the Lord of the Sabbath set an example of keeping it holy. As a result, the disciples who believed in and followed his example can be found in the New Testament observing it.

“Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.”

As an act of obedience to God’s command, we should continue keeping the Sabbath Day holy to receive God’s blessing but surprisingly, the seventh day Sabbath that Christ commemorated is Saturday. Various sources including the calendar, dictionary, and Bible confirm this fact (Mark 16:1–2).

The tradition of worshipping on Sunday instead of Saturday Sabbath arose in AD 321 when Roman Emperor Constantine authorized a day of worship in honor of the sun. Learn more about the blessings of the Sabbath at the World Mission Society Church of God!
