On July 20, 2025, ASEZ university volunteers gathered at the Murphy Recreation Center and nearby streets in South Philadelphia. The Murphy Rec Center, a 4.9-acre community hub, has served generations with a gym, pool, and athletic programs. But in recent years, neighbors have watched litter pile up in nearby alleys and street corners. For many, it felt like the area had been forgotten.
That changed when ASEZ volunteers arrived—not just with rakes and trash bags, but with the purpose to restore and uplift the space. Working in teams, they cleaned both the park and the surrounding neighborhood. They raked leaves, picked up plastic bottles, and swept sidewalks. On Marshall Street, they tackled an alley that had become a dumping ground. Volunteers removed broken furniture, car parts, and loose debris—despite a sudden downpour.

Cleaning Up South Philadelphia Together
Councilman Mark Squilla, who joined the cleanup, expressed, “Even with the city, it’s hard to keep this rec center clean. It’s great to know you’re helping the community. ASEZ, thank you for your efforts. I really enjoyed working with you and look forward to doing it again, making the world a better place.”
The cleanup made a visible difference and left a strong impression on the community. Neighbors, city officials, and volunteers worked side by side, showing that steady efforts can improve shared spaces. ASEZ plans to continue supporting local cleanup efforts as part of its commitment to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future.
