ASEZ STAR Students Clean Wister Playground

On Sunday, April 28, 39 ASEZ STAR students and parents gathered at Wister Playground in Philadelphia, PA, determined to make a difference in their community. The playground sits less than ten minutes from several local schools—Mastery Charter and Martin Luther King High School—making it a familiar place for many students. Because their friends and classmates often use the space, the students felt a strong sense of ownership and responsibility to care for it.

This cleanup was part of the ASEZ STAR Zero Waste Cleanup, a movement within the Green World Project, which focuses on cleaning parks, beaches, streets, and forests. The goal is to inspire students to protect the environment and take pride in improving the areas they call home.

Why Clean Playgrounds Matter

Playgrounds do more than provide fun—they support children’s social growth, physical development, and emotional well‑being. They offer a safe space to run, climb, explore, and connect with friends. But when trash, broken items, or debris fill these spaces, that sense of safety disappears. Children may avoid using the playground altogether, and the community loses an important resource.

ASEZ STAR students understood this clearly. They recognized that a clean space helps younger children feel comfortable and encourages healthy outdoor play. With that mindset, they gathered their tools, gloves, and energy to restore Wister Playground.

A Positive Impact From Future Leaders

Throughout the event, students shared why they chose to volunteer. Kennedy, a high school student, said she participated because “through this we can leave a positive impact on the children in this area.” Lilijana, a middle school volunteer, added, “We’re trying to make the world a better place.”

Their actions lived up to their words. Despite their young age, ASEZ STAR students worked with determination and unity. By the end of the cleanup, they removed 1,200 pounds of trash and debris, transforming the playground into a cleaner and safer environment for everyone. Their effort sent a clear message to neighbors: young people can lead, inspire, and create real change.

The event also strengthened community ties. Parents worked alongside their children, students encouraged one another, and residents passing by expressed gratitude. Cleanups like this help build pride and responsibility—qualities that continue long after the event ends.
