Q: Do Christians Believe in One God or Three Gods?
Christians believe in one God, not three separate Gods. The Bible repeatedly teaches that there is only one God.
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
Deuteronomy 6:4
At the same time, the Bible speaks about the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit (Mt 28:19). Because of this, some people assume Christians worship three different gods. However, the Bible presents the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one God working for humanity’s salvation.
One way we can see this is through Jesus Christ. Although He came to earth as a man, the Bible identifies Him as God.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given ... and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
The apostles also testified that Jesus was in very nature of God (Jn 1:1–3).
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.
Philippians 2:6
The Holy Spirit is likewise described as God’s Spirit rather than a separate god. For this reason, Christians have long used the term “Trinity” to describe the biblical teaching that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one God. While the Bible reveals God in different ways, its message remains consistent:
I am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.
Isaiah 43:11
Understanding who God is matters because salvation comes through knowing and believing in the true God whom the Bible reveals.
