The Blessings and Significance of Baptism
When someone chooses to follow God and live a Christian life, the first step to do so is baptism. Yet, there’s a misconception among some that it’s merely a ritual that can be postponed. This misunderstanding stems from seeing baptism solely as a symbolic gesture, overlooking its profound spiritual significance and blessings.
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
Jesus Himself said that we must be baptized to be saved. Moreover, Apostle Peter reiterated this fact by preaching about the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit through baptism (Ac 2:38).
Knowing this, it would be highly irresponsible and immoral for a church to insist that one must delay their baptism. It would be akin to a doctor diagnosing a patient with a terminal illness but advising him or her to wait several months or even a year for treatment. Such a delay could be fatal.
Tomorrow isn’t promised (Pr 27:1). Thus, the teachings of the Bible emphasize the paramount importance of prioritizing our spiritual life and securing our salvation. As the disciples of the early church fervently preached the gospel, they underscored the urgency of baptism.
“They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.’ Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.”
Acts 16:31–33
